Why go
A place to travel slowly.
Skardu is both a destination and an expedition threshold. The valley balances accessible lakes and forts with the surreal Katpana dunes, while longer routes open towards Deosai and the mountain systems beyond.

Know the place
A fuller guide to Skardu.
Skardu spreads across a broad high valley where the Indus meets routes leading towards Shigar, Khaplu and some of the greatest mountain systems on earth. The town is a logistical centre for expeditions, but an ordinary leisure journey can be equally rewarding. Lakes, desert, forts and village landscapes sit within day trip range, although road times are longer than map distances suggest.
A strong itinerary separates the Skardu basin from the wider Baltistan excursions. Spend time around Kachura, Satpara and Kharpocho, then choose either Shigar, Khaplu or Deosai according to season and interests. Trying to combine every direction in three days creates more windscreen time than experience. Five to seven days makes space for altitude, weather and unplanned stops.
Lakes, fort views and the Skardu basin
Upper Kachura has a more natural setting than the heavily developed Lower Kachura area, while Satpara lies on the road towards Deosai. Kharpocho Fort requires a climb but rewards it with a wide view over the town and river landscape. The cold desert at Katpana changes character with the light, and it is most atmospheric when treated as a landscape rather than a short vehicle stop.

Shigar and Khaplu as cultural journeys
Shigar combines a restored fort, old mosque, gardens and a settlement shaped by water channels and stone lanes. Khaplu lies farther east and deserves an overnight stay if time allows. Its palace, Chaqchan Mosque and surrounding villages provide a deeper view of Balti architecture and everyday life than a rushed out-and-back drive.
Deosai and the high plateau
Deosai is a seasonal high-altitude journey, not a guaranteed year-round excursion. Snow controls opening dates, weather changes quickly and the plateau has limited facilities. A suitable vehicle, warm layers, food, water and an experienced driver are essential. Visitors should keep distance from wildlife, remove all waste and avoid driving away from established tracks.

Build a Baltistan itinerary with two different rhythms
Begin with a gentle basin day after arrival: a chosen lake outing, a meal and time to understand where your hotel sits in relation to the town. On another day, combine a manageable town visit with Kharpocho only if the climb suits the group. The desert landscape deserves its own quiet interval and changing light, rather than being added to an already crowded day because its name sounds close.
Then choose between a cultural extension in Shigar or Khaplu and a more demanding high-country excursion. An overnight stay outside Skardu changes the experience by giving you a village evening and morning instead of two long transfers. Deosai should have its own decision point, with current access, vehicle and conditions confirmed. It is better to leave one direction for another visit than turn a first holiday into a continuous circuit.

Look beyond the headline lake
Kachura, Satpara and the wider excursions do not offer identical experiences. Choose according to the setting, walking, facilities and journey from your base. Ask what a lake visit includes and whether there are charges or private-property arrangements. Treat any boat activity as a separate purchase requiring appropriate local provision, not an automatic feature of a scenic stop. A quiet shore visit is a complete activity in its own right.
In Shigar or Khaplu, pair a heritage building with the settlement around it. A guide can explain the building materials, water arrangements and changes introduced through conservation. Keep religious visits distinct from hotel or museum access, and ask before entering private lanes or courtyards. The area's cultural interest should not disappear behind the expedition imagery for which Skardu is often advertised.
Comfort, altitude and the journey home
Choose accommodation around the part of Baltistan you actually want to visit. A lakefront room and a town hotel have different strengths, particularly for meals, supplies and early departures. Confirm heating, hot water, access steps and the room offered. Ask about the day's actual driving rather than accepting a list of outings described as nearby. Dependable transport and a sensible base can be worth more than an additional attraction.
Keep the final mountain-flight connection or road return separate from an ambitious last excursion. Weather and access changes need room in the schedule, and high-altitude outings warrant consideration of personal health and effort with appropriate professional advice. Agree on the fallback before departure. A programme that can replace one unsuitable outing without ruining the rest of the trip is more valuable than a promise to deliver every photographed landscape.

Kharpocho Fort
A historic hilltop outlook over Skardu and the Indus landscape.
Plan responsibly
Useful context, confirmed closer to departure.
Season windows are planning guidance, not live access guarantees. Road conditions can change quickly. For a booked package, the tourism company must confirm that the relevant roads are open and the trip can proceed.
- Build at least one flexible day into any itinerary that depends on a mountain flight.
- Choose accommodation based on the excursions you value because the valley is geographically spread out.
- Sun protection and hydration matter at altitude even when the air feels cool.
- Confirm Deosai access and road conditions locally shortly before travel.
Research reference: official tourism or heritage information. Access and operating details should still be confirmed close to travel.
Add Skardu to a journey or compare packages that include it. Published packages show their current availability, while final operating confirmations remain the tourism company's responsibility.
